WANT TO BE A READER?

During our beta period, we will be working with a set group of about 500 readers. We are monitoring the diversity of our readers, while we test our products. However, when our beta period is over on January 1st 2018, we will be opening up readership.

How do I qualify to be a reader?

We have two different  types of readers. General Readers and Professional Readers. You must be 15+ to become a reader for Illuminovel. This is considered volunteer work.
General Readership
To qualify, you must be associated with an organization. For example: a public library, established reading group, after school program, high school or college.  If you belong to an organization, you can have your leadership (or professor) contact us directly and General Reader status will be offered to interested parties within your group.
Professional Readers
To qualify, do not need to be a part of an organization, but the requirements are more stringent. Professional readers must either work directly in academia (k-post secondary) or publishing (retired literary agent, retired editor, copy-editor etc).

Benefits

Both General Readers and Professional Readers will receive a non-expiring 50% off discount on all of our review services.
General Readers who are in high school or are undergraduates can request a letter of recommendation from us to use for  their career or to apply to college.
____

Applying

Volunteering as a General Reader:
Please have your teacher, professor, youth leader, manager or the head of your organization email us directly on your behalf. The email must contain information about your group or organization, the amount of members total, as well as members interested and the age range of interested members.  The subject of the email must be “GENERAL READER APPLICATION” and there should be no attachments. Emails with attachments will be deleted unopened.
Volunteering as a Professional Reader:
Please write a short letter illustrating why you are interested in volunteering as a Professional Reader and explaining your background and qualifications. You may include 1 professional reference (phone number and email) for the purpose of verifying identity. If you are an educator and you have students who are interested in Illuminovel, you can apply both as an Professional Reader and submit a request for General Readership as the organization leader. The subject of the email must be “PROFESSIONAL READER APPLICATION” and there should be no attachments. Emails with attachments will be deleted unopened.

ARE YOU AN AGENT?

Whether you were contacted directly by Illuminovel, or found us through other means, welcome! We are happy to have you. This opportunity is open to both active and retired literary agents, as well as  agent assistants, editors and copy editors.

What will we be doing?

Something not terribly dissimilar to what you do regularly–but much quicker.
Agents who work with us will be reviewing manuscript submissions and query letters. The review process consists of 20-25 multiple choice questions and a short space for a paragraph explanation of your decision. The process should take no more than 10-15 minutes maximum, but should be much less.
If you would like to see a copy of the questions, feel free to request along with your application and they will be provided to you.

Payment

Payment is $10 per work reviewed, not to exceed 100 works per week (for a maximum of $4000 a month).
This would make a maximum yearly possible earnings of $52,000.
While this is not intended to be considered full time work, it could certainly be used as such.
Payments will be distributed weekly via squarecash. During our Beta period, payments will be distributed  within 48 hours.

Benefits

Agents who work with us are considered independent contractors.  No tax will be taken out of payments received.
Any manuscripts that you specifically would like to represent that you find through Illuminovel are fair game. As a part of our Terms and Conditions, we have absolutely no claim whatsoever on manuscripts and have no conflict  regarding rights to them. You do not have to notify Illuminovel about your interest in an author found through our services.
Forwarding potential clients through Illuminovel and then reviewing their manuscript for payment through Illuminovel is also acceptable per our Terms of Use.
If you are a literary agency and you have concern about your agents working as independent contractors with us, feel free to contact us and we can blacklist your agents from applying, or arrange a fairer direct compensation structure that works for your agency. There are a limited number of agents and agencies in the US, so we have the freedom to tailor our services to your agency’s needs.

LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION

If you are applying for the sole purpose of receiving a letter of recommendation from Illuminovel, we understand and support your interest in using our company for community service purposes.

You may choose from 3 types of letters

Letter 1: Emphasizes voluntary service.

This option is best for applying to non-academic programs, for use as high school community service requirement, and to supplement college applications.

Letter 2: Emphasizes editing experience.

This option is best for applying for internships,  to non-academic work based programs such as non-for profits, or in pursuit of grants to fund furthering education.

Letter 3: Emphasizes publishing industry work experience

This option is best for applying to non-editing based publishing internships, workshops, or other associated opportunities.

Each letter will be personalized by name. It will include the genres that you prefer, list how many manuscripts you’ve reviewed and hours spent volunteering. It will also notate if any of the manuscripts you’ve touched have been optioned for publication.

You can request an email copy of the letter or a sealed letter delivered in the mail to your address of choice.  Emails regarding recommendations must read “LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION” in the subject line.
